Sibling Rivalry: The Battle to Stay in Touch
All families are different, and all families have their own trials and tribulations. But with a little effort you can make your family life the very best it can be. Some of the most important friendships and relationships we have in life are with our siblings. Your most important friendships should be with your own brothers and sisters. Love your family! Be loyal to them. Have a genuine concern for your brothers and sisters.

It is easy to drift apart as siblings become preoccupied with their own careers and family life. But, here are some simple steps that will help you stay close to your siblings.
  • Forgiveness - Forgiveness is the key!  Siblings are friends that we never got to choose. Everyone will eventually experience a family feud or sibling rivalry. Whether it is accusing your sister of stealing your sweater or fighting with your brother for breaking your favorite toy, it is important to make a conscious effort to forgive our siblings for any childhood misdeeds. Don’t let pride get in the way of improving your relationship.
  • Stay in contact - Establish ongoing communication among siblings, their spouses and their children. Share news of big events: births of babies, graduations, engagements, etc. With social media we no longer have to take time to call on the phone, we can simply send an email, share family blogs, send out a family newsletter and visit Facebook.
  • Spend time together - Research shows that siblings who spend a lot of time together growing up (vacations, summer break, etc.) grow to be closer as adults. If you really want to maintain a strong relationship with your sibling it must be a priority. Make time to be with your siblings. A good relationship requires time spent with each other.
You must do your part to stay in touch. Don’t wait for your siblings to make the first move. No matter how old you are, remember it’s never too late to improve a relationship with a sibling.
